BAT BOY: THE MUSICAL: For Bat Boy, we really wanted to lean into the campy elements of the show and create a non-realistic cave. I was particularly inspired by camp-noir, especially German expressionist film. I felt that the way German expressionist sets utilized contrast, unrealistic perspectives, and heavy stylization as ways of manipulating physical space reflected the wacky and wild world of Bat Boy. By doing the entire set in greyscale, I could play with an exaggerated sense of depth, contrast, and allow for color (be it through lighting, costumes, or blood) to have all that much more importance. The use of a greyscale palette was also meant to reflect the black-and-white worldview of the townsfolk.
